Band We Like
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin: catchy name/catchy songs
June 30, 2008
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin is a highly likeable band from Missouri that play good old fashioned indie pop. When I listen to them, I hear Weezer, The Shins, Pavement and Brendan Benson. There're a lot of "bop bop ba-das" and "ooh-wee-oohs" in their distortion-free choruses, so in other words, not a whole lot of decibel destruction going on here.
The band manages to combine sugar with angst well enough to, perhaps, elicit at least a nod from Rivers Cuomo. I'm fairly certain that choosing "Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin" as a moniker has helped with the initial hype they've been receiving (it's a good name). But whether they can ride their current buzz blitz past the fifteen-minute mark, however, is not up to their name. It's up to their songs.
