Jason Molina's dusty Americana

February 1, 2006
Jason Molina plays a month of Mondays at Schubas! Now you have four chances to catch everyone's favorite blue-collar singer/songwriter alt-folk troubadour. In case you forgot, Molina has also been known during his musical days as Songs: Ohia and the Magnolia Electric Co. (I guess he emulates Will Oldham, I mean Palace, I mean Palace Bros, I mean Palace Music, I mean Bonnie "Prince" Billy, in more ways than one.)

Yet though Molina's stage name may change often, his music was and will always be created in and inspired by the dusty Midwest. This is Americana 101.

Besides Oldham, Molina has often been compared to Neil Young, and rightfully so. When he gets that powerful, brooding tenor going, he sure as hell sounds a lot like Young. Incorporating sliding guitars, violins, swaying rhythms, and intensely confessional-style lyrics, Molina's music makes you want to hitchhike through a landlocked state.

Jason Molina plays Schubas every Monday in February.
