I, along with a few thousand others, saw the Melvins play the Oya Festival in Oslo, Norway a few summers ago. Believe it or not, but it was the first time I got to see these sludge-rock pioneers... and they've been around close to 30 years! (The first time we heard of them was when we read an interview with Kurt Cobain and he said they were like the best band ever.) Shame on us for waiting so long to see them!

Thankfully, their age has done nothing to slow down their punk power. Their show was a mucky and metal-y experience with raw riffage and booming bass solos that made our bowels growl. It was only fitting that it rained all day and we watched this show nearly ankle-deep in mud.

The trio is often credited with starting that dirty, heavy sound that Boris, Jesu, Isis and others took off and ran with. So if you like those bands then you should see the band that started it all. If you like it loud, you won't be disappointed.

Melvins play two shows at the Double Door, on Tuesday, May 31st, and Wednesday, June 1st.
