Cults are actually really rather pleasant.

July 19, 2010
NYC (by way of San Diego) duo Cults are comprised of Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin. Originally, people thought these two twenty-one-year-olds were all mysterious and stuff because they didn't have a MySpace page. No MySpace page?!?! The horror!

But the music they make isn't enigmatic at all. It's really just rather charming and sweet. Apparently, Cults brought the Southern California rays with them when they headed out East, because this is super sunny poppy stuff that will make you want to hit the beach and frolic in the waves with all those itsy bitsy teeny weenie yellow polka dot bikinis. Not very NYC at all.

Cults definitely have a '60s Shangri-las meets '80s Bananarama surf-pop vibe thing going on. And they couple that sun pop with just the right amount of twinkling swirl to make things sound moderately magical. It all adds up to something very pleasant and, well, summer-y.

So if you find yourself in the middle of a cruel, cruel summer this year, try Cults on for size. Their cheery pop might help take some of the edge off. And if that doesn't work for you, well, before you know it, this cruel, cruel summer will be gone and you won't have to worry about it anymore. Then you'll just have to worry about Johnny and his Cobra-Kai gang kicking your ass come September. Sucks.
