Daniel Johnston: the cult legend returns.
August 3, 2009
Do you know the music of Daniel Johnston? You have probably heard his name dropped by a multitude of bands/artists as being an "influence" on their work. And if you've seen the documentary, "The Devil and Daniel Johnston," well then you definitely know all about Daniel Johnston's vastly unique, troubled, sad and hopeful musical journey.
The prolific Texan writes strangely wonderful and decidedly quirky home-recorded folk songs. In Austin throughout the 1980's, he became an underground phenomenon purely on the basis of his shows and homemade cassette tapes. His all-or-nothing on-stage behavior (and subsequent bi-polar diagnosis and downfall) is only part of his legend.
Daniel Johnston's songs are just strange with obsessive songs about girls, God and, of course, darkness and the devil. But they're also beautiful in an other-worldly way. He's not a great singer or guitar player, but his lyrics simply pop. This guy definitely has stuff to say and he says it with his heart on his sleeve. Take that, emo.
