Band We Like: Pill

Pill are four peeps from NYC that make skittish punk chaos. It's somehow danceable too. And because they also incorporate some serious saxophone blows with their grimy riffs and cold booms, the band immediately calls to mind the deranged eccentro-punk goodness of No Wave guys like James Chance and, well, every other punk rock saxman who contorted themselves into oblivion back in the early '80s.

The band recently released their five song debut EP (cryptically titled: Pill) on the excellent DIY NYC label Dull Tools, which is run by Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts (click that if you like reading three-year-old band profiles) and Chris Pickering of Future Punx. I like those two bands too, but perhaps that is a discussion for another time.

Pill have also been playing around a bunch lately (in NYC anyway), honing their skills so that one day when the frantic call comes in for an emergency punk saxophone band to save some late night national television music booker's ass STAT, they'll be ready to step in and give the people of America what they want. Skittish. Punk. Rock. (That's somehow danceable.)

Here's that album I was telling you about two paragraphs previously. I hope you enjoy streaming it as much as I did. One thing, though. If you're not going to blast it you might as well not bother playing it at all. This is a loud band for people who like loud bands. And saxophones. BTW, anybody remember that band Sweep the Leg Johnny? God, they were good. Great sax. One of the greatest band names of all time, too. But perhaps this is a discussion for another time.

Pill are a good band.

File Under: who would you have said besides James Chance?

RIYL: totally - that's who I would have said too
