Band We Like: Jimmy Whispers
Written by Patrick McNamara
Jimmy Whispers is a DIY eccentro pop crooner from Chicago. He's talented. He's funny. He stage dives. He's a future star, probably. And (here's the big news) he's good!
Think slacker soul and you might be on the right track.
You might want to keep thinking, though.
Slacker soul doesn't totally hit it.
Think of something with a little more heat.
I'll tell you what, though, this guy should tour with Sean Nicholas Savage sometime (love him) because that would really be a great eccentro pop pairing. Maybe he already has. I don't know. I just blob here.
Hell, as long as we're making up wish lists, let's get Ariel Pink and Kirin J Callinan on a bill with JDub too (with alternate Mac DeMarco waiting in the wings to step in and save the day should his heroic musical services be necessary).
But anyway, enough wishing...
Mr. Whispers' debut album “Summer in Pain" (see: organ pop jams) was recorded with his iPhone's memo app (never used it!) and it's catchy and messy and really good. Besides seeing him play (and you totally should) it's a great way of getting into Jimmy's goodness. (Please note: it's a grower. Give it space. Give it time. Breathe with it.)
Stream the title track from the album RIGHT NOW. I think you'll like it.
In summation, Jimmy Whispers is good!
(and also, go Bulls!!!!!!)
