The Ballet
NYC's The Ballet are a wonderfully melodic group led by singer/songwriter Greg Goldberg. The band plays pretty-close-to-perfect pop songs that sound a lot like early Magnetic Fields meets a little bit of Jens Lekman. Their myspace url ends in "sissypopband," but I would swap out "sissy" and replace it with "pleasant." It's not like we're talking about Belle and Sebastian here (bust!).
The Ballet incorporates keys and strings around Goldberg's warm melodic vocals and gentle guitar to create songs that you'll immediately want to sing along to when you're feeling happily romantic or just generally carefree.
As DIY as it gets, Goldberg writes and records all of these songs at home and releases all of his records himself. These songs are too good to need help from any labels. Go see The Ballet and prepare to shed your baggage.
