((A Lull)) Band Profile and Upcoming Chicago Concerts - Oh My Rockness

Chicago's A Lull can be a massive group whose roster seems to fluctuate between three members (the core is Nigel Evan Dennis, Todd Miller and Mike Brown), six members, and eight members. Maybe it just depends on how available their friends are at any given time.

Right now, I think membership in this band stands at six, but don't quote me on that. And like the above suggests, this band definitely plays BIG music. Call this epically eclectic art-pop, if you want. We do.

A Lull uses a whole bunch of instruments -- some traditional (like guitars and horns and synths) and some not so traditional (like a bunch of percussive objects you can't quite classify as drums) -- to create lushly layered, atmospheric soundscapes. And the band's perfectly executed harmonies over a subtle electro vibe make everything sound oh so dreamy.

A Lull's pop magic manages to sound complex while also staying extremely accessible. So perhaps because of that, A Lull has been compared often to Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear.

Those two bands have had no trouble appealing to a whole lot of people beyond the art school crowd. And A Lull has the chops to be huge like that too. If that's what they're going for, that is...
