A few years back, a certain member of the Oh My Rockness crew went to a wedding where the French Kicks served as the reception entertainment. That sure beats the hell out of YMCA any day. From their jangly, garage/post-punk beginnings (akin to bands like Interpol and The Walkmen) to their more restrained pop-synth evolution (sounding closer to a modernized Tears for Fears), the French Kicks have consistently written seemingly effortless pop songs.

While some older fans may be disappointed that pure loudness isn't as pronounced in the Kicks's new hushed repertoire, they can still dust off the amps and crank it up on stage. Now they just have more weapons in their musical arsenal to choose from -- their strongest these days being subtlety.

I assume the wedding band thing was a one-time deal because there's no way these guys are going to be relegated to marriage celebrations in the near future.
